“Mauer Park” has really good karaoke. You have to check it out,” our host said as she opened the door to our apartment.
“Ummm.. thanks, that sounds really cool,” I replied.
“Yeah, really you should check it out,” she insisted.
Mark and I looked at each other. We were not really into karaoke. Did she say that to us because we’re Asian? Do people in Berlin like karaoke?
Well, it took us one week to find out the answer to that. Apparently, people in Berlin do love karaoke. Another reason to add to my “why I should move to Berlin list.”
They really do karoake BIG here. In fact, I have to say it was the highlight of Mauer Park flea market. People liked watching other people sing. It was so crowded that it was hard to get a good seat around the open stage. People just sat on the grass and drank their beers.
It was a big awesome spectacular show. When I arrived, a juggling show was in progress. I have to say this guy knew how to entertain with his humor and juggling skills. In fact, I have to say he was hilarious. People enjoyed his show so much, there was a large crowd lining up to give him money.
Next up was an awesome band called Lukas Graham.
So, where were we? Oh yeah, KARAOKE! People crowded around the outdoor stage. It was hard to find a good viewing spot especially if you’re vertically challenged like me. I finally found a spot at the side by squeezing my way in and watched the brave souls make a spectacle. Some were talented and some not so, but it was all for fun. I mean, these people really went all out with their singing and did some crazy dance moves too.
The audience were something else. They were actually really great cheering for the performers. They even clapped for the not so talented ones.
I had so much fun. So YES! Berliners do love their karoake and this Asian girl loves it too.
