So many regrets and wishes in Iceland. But my biggest regret was not spending more time in the East Fjords. We were pressed for time, and we just sped through the majestic mountains, jagged coastline, and green meadows to reach Skaftafell.
I’ve heard of the beauty of the East Fjords of Iceland, but never understood what the “hype” was until we drove through. We had 11 days to drive around Iceland’s Ring Road, but it wasn’t enough time. We had to pick and choose what to see in our itinerary. Unfortunately the East Fjords, Snæfellsnes, Higlands, and West Fjords we’re not in the itinerary. The difference with the East Fjords, and the other places we didn’t stop and explore was that we actually had a quick “glimpse” of what we were missing out on. However in this case the saying “ignorance is bliss” applied to the places we never saw.
I’ve written about the beauty of Iceland before, and how I wanted to stop every few minutes to take photos. It was just heartbreaking to know we just didn’t have the time to explore.
The clouds were overcast as we drove. One would think that Iceland without the sun would be barren and gloomy, but instead I found it full of life. Sheep grazed the green meadows, while horses galloped in front of an abandoned stone farm. Swans swam in green marshes, where colorful lupines flourished. It was magical.
If I could do it over again, I would have stayed at least overnight in one of the coastal towns of the East Fjords.
